There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.
When I worked at Greene, Tweed & Co. in Houston, TX early in my career, I worked on a team that designed custom electro-mechanical connectors for harsh oil and gas environments. I noticed that we often “reinvented the wheel” with each design — engineers would start from scratch on components and assemblies that might have already been completed, resulting in redundant work and nearly duplicate designs.

My goal was to find a standard set of designs that would fit the majority of customer needs. I analyzed over a thousand released designs and consolidated the specs of each down to a handful of products that customers could choose from if they needed a quicker solution. This preliminary catalog of parts earned me a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
Many years after I had left Greene, Tweed, my preliminary idea took root and turned into a formal catalog of standard products!
